About the project

The European University of the Seas (SEA-EU) is an alliance of 6 european universities. It aims at the creation of an european campus representing the european identity and in what mobility is possible without any hurdles.

About the project

This SEA-EU Alliance was established in 2019 and co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

Under the leadership of the University of Cádiz (Spain), and together with the partner universities of Western Brittany (Brest, France), Gdańsk (Poland), Split (Croatia) and Malta and Kiel University (Germany), SEA-EU plans to enhance the quality of marine science education across all faculties and at all six locations. The alliance aims to strengthen links between education, research and innovation, as well as to foster social engagement and environmental responsibility. This ambitious initiative echoes the vision of European Commission to ‘dare to dream’.

One campus at six different universities for students at all levels – that is the vision of SEA-EU

To reach their goals, the European partners plan to create equal conditions for mobility between the individual European locations, as well as digital learning and teaching formats and networking opportunities. The European University of the Seas (SEA-EU) offers the ideal platform for this. It connects six universities in coastal cities with a long historical, cultural and economic tradition related to the sea, and also geographically include most European seas. The participating institutions are set up on a multidisciplinary basis, and pursue innovation strategies, in which sustainability concepts play an essential role. Similarly, conveying knowledge of the marine environment, marine resources and the sustainable protection and use of the oceans is a central concern of the consortium.

SEA-EU’s offers are aimed at all targets (students, academic and non-academic staff) and all educational levels (BSc, MSc, PhD). In addition to individual courses offered in one of the partner universities, the programme also includes summer schools, semesters abroad, trips on research vessels (field trips) or staff weeks. Cultural and sporting events are intended to supplement the curriculum in the long-term, aiding to weave the SEA-EU concept into the coastal lifestyles.

Vision of SEA-EU

The vision of the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU) is to establish a distinctly international, pluri-ethnic, multilingual and interdisciplinary European University. SEA-EU aims to strengthen the links between teaching, research, innovation and knowledge transfer. It will encourage excellence in research and teaching to gain more knowledge and a better understanding and management of the marine environment. It will assist in building the human resources and skills necessary to match the needs of the evolving marine and maritime sectors, now and in the foreseeable future. SEA-EU will provide and improve tools and techniques to measure and anticipate ocean-based and driven impacts, build frameworks for more effective ocean governance as well as empower societies and communities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for the oceans.
